3.3 Planning the Load

Before you install your Power Transfer Switch, you'll want to strategize which appliances you'll run during a power outage. This all begins with understanding how your generator produces power.

Most generators equipped with four-prong, twist-lock 30 Amp receptacles and set up for home standby generate 120/240 Volt power. This is just like the electricity your home receives from the utility. It's ideal because it allows you to power common 120 Volt circuits (think lights and small appliances) and also link two 120 Volt circuits to run 240 Volt devices, like a well pump.

Your generator produces power in two equal halves. For instance, a 7200-watt generator effectively has two 3600-watt "lines" or phases. To get the most out of your generator, it's crucial to balance the load evenly between these two halves of your transfer switch: Line 1 and Line 2. You'll want to divide your highest-wattage
devices as evenly as possible.

Your Power Transfer Switch has 12 circuits: Circuits 1L, 3L, 5L, 2R, 4R and 6R belong to Line 1, while Circuits 2L, 4L, 6L, 1R, 3R and 5R belong to Line 2. For example, you might wire the kitchen light to Circuit 3L and your refrigerator to Circuit 3R. You could also reserve Circuits 1L and 2L, linked by the Switch Bridge, for a double- pole breaker controlling a 240 Volt well pump. It's a good idea to study which existing appliances are on which line (phase) in your home's electrical panel to plan accordingly.

Your Power Transfer Switch also lets you manually manage the load by turning appliances on and off as needed, preventing you from overloading either half of your generator. If you prefer not to manage manually, include a buffer in your calculations. This buffer should equal the largest start-up wattage of any appliance you'll run continuously. This buffer, combined with your generator's peak wattage, will account for the periodic motor start-up of larger appliances like your refrigerator. If your transfer switch has watt meters, they can help you monitor this.

3.4 Install the Power Inlet

3.5 Mount the Power Transfer Switch

3.5.1 Please follow these steps.

a. Locate your load center.
b. Decide the appropriate location to install the power transfer switch. Make sure it is within 18-inch range from your load center as figure 1 shows.
c. If you prefer to flush mount the power transfer switch, purchase the flush mount kit through www. naturesgenerator.com or 800-975-7909 before the installation.
d. Mount the power transfer switch by securing the screws to the wall through the holes on the flanges.
e. You may cut a piece of plywood as the supporting board in between the power transfer switch and the wall for additional support.

3.6 Prepare the Load Center

3.6.1 Please follow these steps.

a. Turn off the main circuit breaker in the load center to ensure your safety.
b. Remove the cover of the load center.
c. Remove an 1-1/4 inch knockout on the near side of the load center towards the power transfer switch.
d. Cut the flexible conduit to the length you desire. Insert the wires from the power transfer switch though the flexible conduit and connect the other end of the flexible conduit to the knockout. Secure the flexible conduit with the cable clamps provided.
e. Do not attempt to bend the flexible conduit beyond its structural capabilities.

Warning: Verify the condition of power source prior to manually transferring. Manual
operation may result in out-of-phase transfer when both sources are energized.

Warning: Do not start the generator until all connectors are connected or made to be
inaccessible. Any terminal may be energized when any cable is connected. De-energize cables at the generator prior to connecting or removing any connectors.

Caution: This switch will not transfer if overcurrent device opens due to fault.

Caution: Manual Transfer Switch – This device will not automatically transfer to an
alternative source.

Danger: Risk of electric shock.

Danger: Any Terminal may be energized when any cable is connected. De-energize
cables at the generator prior to opening the cover.

Danger: Risk of electric shock. For use only for connection of a portable generator to
the source terminals of a transfer switch, such that the inlets are only energized from
the generator.

3.7 Installing 120V Circuits
